Foundations and Orientation Examination (GOP)

The Foundations and Orientation Examination (GOP) is an accompanying exam in the computer science teacher education program according to LPO I (2008) for Gymnasium, Realschule, and Mittelschule school types. The purpose of this exam, similar to an intermediate exam, is to determine early on whether you are suitable for the chosen course of study.

The GOP stipulates that by the end of the second semester, modules amounting to 40 ECTS must be successfully completed under certain conditions. For students starting from the winter semester 2022/23, the following conditions apply:

  • In the case of the advanced study (Gymnasium), at least 20 ECTS must be successfully completed from the following modules:
    • Principles of Programming
    • Secure Systems
    • Introduction to Algorithmics
    • Theoretical Computer Science for Business Informatics and Teacher Education Students
    • Parallel and Functional Programming
    • Introduction to Software Engineering
    • Introduction to Databases
  • In the case of the non-advanced study (Realschule, Mittelschule), at least two of the following modules must be successfully completed:
    • Principles of Programming
    • Secure Systems
    • Introduction to Algorithmics
    • Parallel and Functional Programming
    • Introduction to Software Engineering
    • Introduction to Databases
  • The GOP regulations of the respective combination subject must be adhered to, where modules amounting to up to 20 ECTS are defined as GOP modules. The specific regulations can be found in the respective subject examination regulations.
  • The LAPO (§8 (2)) allows an extension of the deadline for completing the GOP by one semester, i.e., until the end of the third semester. Furthermore, an application for an extension can be submitted to the examination office.

If the total number of credits of the modules specified by these regulations is less than 40 ECTS, any additional module completed by the third semester (computer science, combination subject, educational sciences) will be used for the GOP. Once 40 ECTS are exceeded according to these regulations, the GOP is considered passed. However, it should be noted that GOP exams can only be reset once. If the corresponding exam is not passed even then, the course of study is unfortunately terminated. Non-GOP exams may be reset twice.

Only the information in the LAPO or FPO, which is valid during your study, is legally binding for you.
